The public and other important agencies are ignored during normal office hours
The public expects important public offices, such as the Coroner’s Office to be open and responsive during normal business hours.
Daily, beginning at 11:30 a.m. and ending at 12:30 p.m., the incumbent closes down the Cornoner’s office.
The phones ring, but go unanswered.
This practice has the effect of closing off the mode of communication that most people use to contact Coroners for important business, at the only time that many of the public (who are employed in regular jobs) have an opportunity to make such a call. 1
How many bereaved families have been prevented from getting simple services they have already paid for with their tax dollars?
How many police officers were forced to rearrange their schedules to try to call again at a time when the phones were being answered?
How many calls were coming in from hospitals with information or requests?
We will never know, because the incumbent is more focused on what he would rather do than what he was elected to do.
1 This is reported by Lora Thomas, who worked in the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office very recently. Lora has just won the Republican Primary in Douglas County, and is running to be the next Douglas County Coroner. She is going to clean up that office and run it right, as well.
